BANFF • MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL

WE TAKE YOU BACK TO THE MOUNTAINS!

The setting for two adventure documentaries with uncommon themes: In Balkan Express, we explore Europe’s wildest mountains via bike and ski. To The Hills & Back heads into the Canadian Rockies and the Alps, where it focuses on safety in the backcountry. The powerfully visual Creation Theory invites us to join three athletes and a musician in their search for the source of creativity through snowboarding and surfing and a rousing soundtrack. Deep-water soloing in Mexico is also featured in the program in the film Reel Rock: Cenote, which reveals how Adolfo ‘Fito’ Trujillo discovered his passion for climbing while swimming. And with the fast-paced rides of Colors of Mexico and Continuum, there's no shortage of mountain biking action.

Line-up

CREATION THEORY • Where does creativity come from? Does the creative spark ignite only in the mind or also in the body, in adventure, in experience? These are the questions that three athletes and a musician explore in this film—not just theoretically but practically! The outcome of this exploration is an imaginative and visually stunning mix of snowboarding and surfing with a rousing soundtrack to sit back and enjoy. [20']

BALKAN EXPRESSSmall budget, big dreams. Max Kroneck and Jochen Mesle show you how to get maximum adventure at minimum expense. For these adventurers from Munich, the journey is the destination. They’re traveling via one-way ticket from their hometown to Thessaloniki. From there, the cyclists and freeriders want to bike back home and have, of course, brought their skis along. They’re hoping for a series of spectacular descents away from the usual freeride spots. 2,500 kilometers through the wildest mountains in Europe lie ahead of Max and Jochen, and the Balkans do not disappoint, surprising the adventurers with a series of spontaneous and genial encounters. COLORS OF MEXICO • Mountain biker Kilian Bron loves to explore the world on two wheels. This time, the Frenchman finds himself in Mexico. Always on the lookout for new trails and challenges, his journey takes him from the colorful streets of its capital, Mexico City, to the summit of Popocatépetl—the country's second-highest active volcano at 5,426 meters—and back again. "Colors of Mexico" is the quintessence of his four-week mountain bike adventure—four minutes full of fast-paced rides and dreamlike images set to the perfect soundtrack. [4']

TO THE HILLS AND BACK • Veteran mountain guide and rescuer Bradford White has experienced many devastating events in the Canadian Rockies. At a remote backcountry cabin, he and his daughter, Ginny, consider some tough questions. Have people lost respect for the mountains? Have they become more reckless because they are overconfident about being rescued in an emergency? ‘To The Hills & Back’ reveals that there are no simple answers to these questions. Along with the mountain guide and his daughter, the film also provides Adam Campbell and Katie Combaluzier the chance to share their perspectives. Both have faced avalanche incidents with serious consequences while ski touring in Canada and France. Through hearing their stories, we can all learn from their experience and potentially avoid the same mistakes. [45']

CONTINUUM • Eight rides in eight locations; one perfect edit. Athletes often talk about being in flow, when everything runs with precision, all movements converge into one, and the body and mind form a unity. In ‘Continuum’, professional biker Brett Rheeder gets the maximum flow out of his bike—and the visual journey. The film is edited in such a way that Brett's eight rides merge seamlessly into one another and appear as one long downhill run. Each ride is an extension of the one before and every reentry is a transition to the next launch. [2']

REEL ROCK: CENOTE • Deep blue water and mystical charm. The cenotes on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula are known for their unique ambiance. The underground caves are popular for swimming and diving yet have even more to offer. ‘Cenote’ tells the story of Adolfo ‘Fito’ Trujillo, who accidentally discovered his passion for climbing while swimming. He was deep-water soloing (free climbing over bodies of water) without even knowing that what he was doing had a name. Today, the papaya farmer is running the first climbing gym in his town and hopes to get even more people in his area excited about the sport. [9']
