The 'Seminars on Wednesday' started in 2012 and give the opportunity to Björn Schmelzer to clarify and deepen his research and its context of the work with graindelavoix. Starting point of this series is the question what kind of event the invention of Parisian polyphony in the 12th century is and what kind of break did it force in the perception and function of music, art and culture in general. According to Schmelzer Parisian polyphony is not the result of a long, slow process, but of an abrupt rupture, giving way to a modern concept of art.
We welcome everyone to this seminar which focuses on the broader cultural context of this break and its consequences. Special attention will go to the importance of notation, quantification and the machine; the philosophical and theological redefining of the concepts of ‘Nature’ and 'Incarnation' and the impact on art of this crucial rupture with the tradition of cosmic and moral balance.
Four Wednesdays in May and June, starting May 15th, at 8pm at the Zuiderpershuis in Antwerp. Free entrance, registration possible but not required (also possible to follow the seminars separately).
